We'll customize the Default Finder Window from start to finish. Sidebar Preferences: To customize the Sidebar simply press the keyboard shortcut command+, (command + comma) or from the Finder menubar click Finder then Choose Preferences... If not already selected, click on the Sidebar Tab and now select or deselect which items to show in the Finder Sidebar. I'll just select the MacStudioA Home Icon and the internal and external Hard Drives to be shown. Tab, Path and Status Bar: Next we'll add the Tab Bar, Path and Status Indicators to the Finder Window. Either use the mouse to select the indicators from the Finder menubar by selecting View and select the Indicators to include on the Finder Window or the following keyboard shortcut: To Show the Tab Bar press the following Keyboard shortcut: Shift-Command-T To Show the Path Bar press the following Keyboard shortcut: Option-Command-P To Show the Status Bar press the following Keyboard shortcut: Command-forward Slash / Customize the Finder Toolbar: To Customize the Finder Toolbar, press the keyboard shortcut control + click or right+click on Finder Toolbar area and Select Customize Toolbar... From here we'll just choose to show Icon and Text, plus the Get Info and Quick Preview buttons. Add App Icons and Folders to the Toolbar or Sidebar: If you find that you have particular Apps, files or folders that you open or use on a regular basis, you can Drag them by holding down the Command Key then click and Drag the files to the Finder Toolbar or Sidebar Area. Removing Icons from the Toolbar or Sidebar: Incidentally, To remove icons or folders from the Toolbar, Hold down the Command Key then Click and Drag the Icon onto the Desktop. To remove Icon from the sidebar, just click and drag the Icon from the sidebar onto the desktop. Finder Background: To change the background of the Finder Window from white with a particular color or picture, just click View from the Finder menubar and select Show View Options or use the keyboard shortcut command+J. Now, from the Pop View Options window, and where it says Background, select the Color Radio Button and click on the Box to select a color to add or select the Picture Radio Button and Drag a Picture into the Box as shown. Note: Colors and Pictures are only visible when in the Icon View Mode. Top Tip: These days most Pictures are taken in High-Res mode, like most of the Wallpapers included in Mavericks, typically between 300 to 240 ppi. When adding a Hi-Res Wallpaper or Image to the background of the Finder Window, it may not fill the entire Window as shown here. If that's the case, you will need to reduce it's Resolution. Briefly; to do so, first make a copy of the Image that you wish to use, then open the copy of the image using your favorite image editor or you can use Preview, which allows you to change the resolution, it's pixel density or pip (pixels per inch) Now; from the Preview menubar, go to Tools and choose Adjust Size, now change only the Resolution of the Image, in my case i used a value of 130 ppi, experiment with different values that works best for you, then save the file and simply drag the image into the box as shown.
