File Path to the Dock.app Resources Folder: /System/Library/CoreServices/Dock.app/Contents/Resources Performed and Tested On MacBook Air (Late 2013) and Using OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 Apple's Intel Based Systems: Mac Mini iMac Mac Pro MacBook Air MacBook Pro RAW SCRIPT: In this Episode, How To Change the Dashboard Background in OS X Mavericks. Changing the Dashboard Background is a relatively easy process, involving changing just two files. So...Let's Get Started The two files that we need to change is located in Dock's app Resources folder. Go there directly by Typing the following Path in Finder. Press the keyboard short-cut in Finder: Shift-Command-G to bring up the "Go to Folder..." Window and type the following path in the Window: /System/Library/CoreServices/Dock.app/Contents/Resources Or you could take the Scenic Route: Macintosh HD -- System -- Library -- CoreServices -- Dock.app -- Contents -- Resources Now, once in the Dock.app Resources Folder, locate the following 2 files: dbgrid.png and dbgrid@2x.png Before diving right in... MAKE SURE TO MAKE A BACKUP OF THE TWO FILES...OTHERWISE...A RE-INSTALLATION OF OS X MAVERICKS IS NECESSARY TO GET THEM BACK...AND THAT'S DEFINITELY WHAT WE DON'T WANT. So, with the backups taken care of and stored in a safe place...it's time for the fun stuff. Basically; choose a wallpaper that you wish to use for the Dashboard Background...for simplicity, use one of the wallpapers included in Mavericks or create your own, as I have done. Firstly, if your image file is in the jpg format, you will need to change it to png. Just open the jpg file in Preview and Export it as a png format. Secondly, make a duplicate of the png image file. Thirdly, rename them both accordingly, dbgrid.png and dbgrid@2x Finally; all that's needed is to copy them both to the Dock.app Resources Folder. After pressing Replace, you will be asked to enter your Admin Details to Confirm. For the changes to take effect, either logout and in again or type the following command in Terminal: killall Dock And voilà, the Dashboard has a new background. That's all there is to it.
